Presentation
With this event we seek to present and publicly publicize the National Breastfeeding Friendly Pharmacy Project, coordinated by Adriana Pereira and dreamed and designed by her since 2001. This initiative began in Italy in 2007, being part of the Il Melograno Itália Association. It is a project for the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding that is part of UNICEF's programs worldwide. In Portugal, it is being integrated into the Protection, Promotion and Support for Breastfeeding programs of the Ministry of Health (General Directorate of Health).
The supreme objective is to contribute to increasing breastfeeding rates in Portugal. It is aimed at all pharmacies nationwide and their employees who intend to respond to what is recommended in this project.
Low breastfeeding rates are a global public health problem, and scientific studies show that mothers need help to breastfeed successfully. Pharmacies, according to UNICEF and WHO, can be a great resource for the community and their employees with specialized training in this area, can be one of the "hot chain" rings in supporting pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and their families.
By becoming Breastfeeding Friendly, the Pharmacy is developing its work in accordance with the guidelines of UNICEF and WHO and the Ministry of Health. To this end, the Pharmacy must commit to:
- Join the national project Farmácia Amiga do Aitamento Materno
- Complete the nine steps of this project
- Respect the International Code of Breast Milk Substitutes
- Be subject to evaluation by external auditors to obtain certification and be periodically re-evaluated to ensure compliance with the International Code of Breast Milk Substitutes and the criteria of this initiative.
