World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated to draw the attention of everyone in society to the importance of breastfeeding.
This event began 21 years ago and is now celebrated almost all over the world, Portugal has participated since 2006.
Each year, the promoting organizations propose a theme and define the objectives.
This year’s theme is “Support for breastfeeding mothers: close, continuous and timely
The objectives of SMAM are several, we highlight two here
1. Draw attention to the importance of mother-to-mother support, friends who have already breastfed, husbands/partners, health professionals
2. Let people know that the benefits of this support for mothers can be highly effective. Sometimes it is enough to give a compliment to a breastfeeding mother for her to be more successful.
